A domestic help in her thirties died after sustaining serious burn injuries at the residence of her employer at Kasabpura on Saturday. Shahnaz Begum was declared dead at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) some 13 hours after she suffered 65% burns. The incident took place in the residence of Baig family, which owns a chain of eating joints in Nagpur and Middle-East.
Shahnaz had been employed at the residence of the Baig family for last one-and-half years. She used to stay at the Baig residence. Sources said Shahnaz's husband, originally from Bangladesh, had fled Mominpura after the local unit of state Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) had conducted repeated raids in the locality. Shahnaz's husband had taken their elder son with him too.
Sources in the Baig family said Shahnaz had been depressed over her separation from husband and son. She used to refer to her growing son frequently in conversations. Police too said that in the initial investigation it has come to fore that Shahnaz was disturbed over being separated from her family members. She had two daughters too.
Mirza Tarik Baig said he was resting on the second floor when a commotion alerted him. "She had set herself afire in the bathroom on the third floor. The woman had already come out of the bathroom when we reached the place," said Tarik. "I shifted her to IGGMCH in an ambulance," he said.
Cops from Tehsil police station came to the hospital to speak to Shahnaz but she was formally declared unfit for a statement by the doctors. Shahnaz was able to mutter a few words to the cops about setting herself on fire. Senior police inspector SS Nandanwar of Tehsil police station ruled out any foul play.
