Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), a local civic body, has been appointed the special planning authority for the Nagpur Metropolitan Region (NMR), in a move that will vastly expand the former's area of jurisdiction. State government's Urban Development Department recently issued the much-awaited
notification appointing NIT as the planning agency for the state's second capital.
NIT's jurisdiction will now widen to a total area ad-measuring 3,700 sq km from the current 217 sq km, including the 85 sq km of Nagpur Municipal Corporation.
The proposed region, in size, will be the biggest such urban area in Maharashtra and second only to Hyderabad in the country, official sources said.
