interesting phase with the search panel led by former chief justice of Delhi high court AP Shah receiving as many as 94 applications by October 20, the last date for applying. This is just six less than what Mumbai University had received when applications were invited for its VC`s post for which ultimately Nagpur-based Rajan Welukar was selected.
Justice Shah confirmed to TOI that the panel had received 94 applications and said it would take at least two to three weeks to scrutinize them. "Everything will be done as per the statutes laid down. We`re supposed to give five names to the Governor`s office which will be done in due course of time," he said while refusing to comment further.
The panel, after much delay, had invited applications from the eligible candidates last month for the post that almost always was mired in controversies during last decade and half. When contacted, registrar with National Law School, Delhi, Shrikrishna Deva Rao, who was appointed as public relations officer for entire selection process, refused to comment stating that Justice Shah will be a right person to talk to as the matter was "confidential". "We`ve stopped accepting applications after October 20 as the advertisement was last published on September 20," he said.
Sources however informed that many prominent names from NU academic circles had applied. They include former pro-VC GS Parasher, officiating pro-VC Arvind Chaudhari, former head of fine arts department Vinod Indurkar, NU centre for women`s studies director Nilima Deshmukh, HoD of NU`s biotechnology centre Sudhir Meshram, pharmacy department`s Naresh Gaikwad, Mahila Mahavidyalaya principal Mrunalini Fadnavis, former management council member Pramod Yeole, and former Institute of Science director Vilas Tabhane. YCMOU VC R Krishna Kumar is also believed to be in the running. Candidates from Sagar University and also from Delhi have applied for the post.
However, Parasher, though considered among hot favourites, categorically denied that he had applied for the post. "No. I have not applied," he asserted. Chaudhari also denied having sent in his application, stating that he was not in the race at all. In fact, his name was proposed by someone for the Gondwana University, he said. Indurkar, Deshmukh and Meshram confirmed that they had applied for VC`s post while others could not be contacted.
