Even before the administration has finished assessing the damage caused due to heavy rains in September, reports of fresh damage to crops due to rains last week are pouring in. While the Nagpur Zilla Parishad is talking of severe damage to paddy in some areas in the district, the office of the joint director of agriculture Nagpur division says that except for some low lying patches there isn`t much damage to most crops including cotton.
JC Bhutada, joint director of agriculture, told TOI that recent rains had caused some damage in a few areas but by and large there was not much damage to crops like cotton, soyabean, tur etc. "It is difficult to make any definite comment yet. The ground information will confirmed with satellite data. We are also waiting for the actual `anewari` report from revenue department," he said. Bhutada said that the last spell of rain was in fact good after a prolonged dry spell for cotton and other crops. The situation is different at different places due to uneven distribution of rain in the region. There is yellowing of cotton at some places.
Paddy crop ready for harvesting on around 4500 hectares in Mouda tehsil in Nagpur has been submerged in water, causing heavy loss to farmers. Soyabean growers have also been severely affected by the rains that lashed the district on October 21. In fact, a preliminary survey by tehsil office has estimated the loss of paddy growers at Rs 15 crore.
Agriculture development officer of Zilla Parishad Vilas Kolte informed that the district collector Pravin Darade had issued orders to assess the damage through videography of affected fields. Besides, help of remote sensing department would also be sought for assessing the crop damage, said Kolte. The exact loss estimate would be available only after completion of the survey.
The farmers could not even dry and store the harvested paddy and fear that if kept wet for long, it would begin to sprout. "Due to rains, farmers find it difficult to transport the harvested paddy to safer places," said Zilla Parishad agriculture committee chairman Mahesh Brahmnote.
Brahmnote claimed that unseasonal rain had also damaged ready crops of cotton in Mouda, Ramtek, Umrer, Bhivapur, Kamptee and Nagpur rural areas. He is demanding that Darade should declare Mouda tehsil as `wet drought` affected. He claimed that farmers from Ramtek had also suffered a huge loss.
The district collector had earlier twice ordered tehsildars and talathis to survey of crop damage due to rains in September. On October 6, the collector had convened a special meeting of revenue officials on the issue but the officials are yet to submit the report of their findings. Resident deputy collector Pramod Bhusari, who is also in-charge of district natural disaster cell, said that the collectorate had not received any damage report of crops due to heavy rains.
