Covering more than 8000 km through 200 cities and thousands of villages, the yatras are aimed aim at raising awareness among people about renewable energy and energy efficiency. Crores of people are expected to benefit through this unique initiative.
IIES, which is being organised with support from government of India, also aims to launch what is being dubbed as the `Orange Revolution`, which encourages energy security and energy sufficiency. It is an effort to bring together the government, industry, academia and the general public and engage them in active participation in changing the energy scenario of the nation.
The yatras will begin simultaneously from Kanyakumari, Amritsar, Rajkot and Kolkata on January 12, 2011, marking the 148th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The summit would be held between January 28 and 30 at Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) who are the local host. Uniqueness of these yatras is that all vehicles would run on alternative fuels or sources of energy like battery-run cars.
Chief mentor and national president of Vijnana Bharti, Vijay Bhatkar (man behind Param supercomputer) who was in city for the first announcement of the summit said that India needed alternative sources of energy to meet the demands of a growing population but these should be cleaner sources. The energy awareness campaign is being organised under the guidance of former chairman of Department of Atomic Energy Dr Anil Kakodkar and former director of Neeri Tapan Chakrabarti.
"Government of India is working on an alternative and viable energy source model in order to minimise the carbon emissions," said Bhatkar at a press conference. Another objective, he said, was to make rural India self-reliant in energy.
