PAs to MLAs use assembly entrance for protest

On Friday, those attending the Nagpur session saw an odd protest playing out, as more than 25 personal assistants (PAs) of various MLAs were protesting on the steps leading to the state assembly. The PAs are seeking better pay and insurance for them.

"We are getting less than government employees, even Class IV staff working in the government departments gets better pay than us," said Sachin Pawar, PA to BJP MLA Prakash Mehta. Pawar claimed that they were being paid a measly Rs 8,000 per month. They also demanded that on the lines of MLAs, the state government should provide medical insurance for them too.

If the PAs wanted their voices to be heard, they were barking up the wrong tree, since the protest was not received well. Assembly Speaker Dilip Walse Patil told the house that hereafter such protests will not be tolerated.

"They are not government employees, and they are treading on the rights of MLAs by starting a protest within the assembly building. They have access to the building only because they are PAs to the MLAs and not for any other reason. This will not be tolerated again, if they want to raise such an issue then let their MLAs raise the issue in the house," Patil suggested.

On condition of anonymity, a senior Congress minister said that the PAs are private individuals who have been employed by the MLAs. "PAs cannot compare themselves with government employees. If at all they want any perks or benefits, they should take it from their respective MLA and not the government," he said.
