2 mths after exams, no sign of results

The Nagpur University has back to doing what it does best. Even two months after the winter examinations, the results of most of them are yet to be declared. Expectedly, the students are crying foul as the delay has only compounded their problems. Those belonging to the engineering faculty particularly are the most affected ones due to the more number of semesters involved in the course.

According to the students, the winter exams were postponed by about a month by the NU authorities after announcing the schedule as early as in June last year. However, due to shortage of staff and lack of its own preparations, all exams were deferred by a month. Even the timetable was not ready. Now, after most of the exams were over in October and mid-November, there were no signs of results coming out. Some exams like MBA will also go on till mid-February.

Students who were earlier harassed due to the delay in revaluation results as they arrived after the winter exams were over, are now faced with another set of problems, including applying for the competitive exams and jobs where final year marksheets/degrees are a must.

Officiating controller of examinations (CoE) PS Kane admitted that there was a delay in result declaration owing to severe scarcity of valuators to check the papers. He however assured that 90% work will be over by the end of February. "There are multiple problems but we're putting our best efforts. Since many new engineering colleges have mushroomed which resulted in subsequent rise in number of students, these problems have cropped up," he said.

He stated that since most of the private colleges operating on the basis of contributory teachers instead of approved ones, NU was finding hard to get them for valuation. "Only approved lecturers can check the copies, however their numbers are too less," said Kane who is now looking after the charge of registrar as Mahesh Yenkie has gone on a vacation.

According to him, though the number students shot up across all faculties, the same was not the case with valuators, especially in the professional courses. "For such courses, moderation which means rechecking is done from another set of lecturers. This is also leading to the delay," Kane pointed out.

Sources in NU blamed the problems on the state government's blind expansion of colleges and also on NU bosses who provide affiliation without verifying facilities. They disclosed that the exam section was itself under a huge burden of conducting exams of over 4.5 lakh students from 800 colleges.

It conducts over 1,000 exams and sets nearly 8,000 papers along with doing valuation. The exam staff is involved in issuing photocopies and doing revaluation, making seating arrangements for exams, and sending registered mails to students and colleges among others.
