Animal activist prods cops to act against bull fights

An alert animal activist forced the cops to swing into action and raid a location behind the residential colony of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) on Sunday where a racket was allegedly involved in organising bull fights.

Karishma Galani of People For Animals (PFA) said that a local resident had informed her about bull fights in an open space behind the residential area. The bulls, decked up with garlands and with painted horns, were taken to the field to fight.

After being informed by Galani, Jaripatka cops reached the place while the fight was underway. Cops rounded up the bull owner Naresh Yadav and charged him under sections 100 and 117 of Bombay Police Act for subjecting animals to cruelty and allowing it to endanger the lives of other people.

Police said that Yadav owns around 35 animals, which he keeps in his shed near Mata Mandir in Jaripatka. The cops said that most of the onlookers had fled after seeing the cops approach. "We found two persons with the bulls at the ground but there was no evidence of any gambling. There was no evidence that they were allowing the animals to fight too," said an officer from Jaripatka police. The cops said that Yadav was allowed to take his animals back with him.

"The cops should have rounded up more persons from the place and questioned them in a proper manner. It was baffling why the cops showed such leniency toward persons making animals fight each other. It was certainly a part of the gambling racket which the cops ignored," said Galani. She had also called up city police chief Ankush Dhanvijay to inform him about the incident.

Unconfirmed reports said that gambling over bull fights is fast becoming a trend in the city. Earlier, cock fights used to draw maximum crowds with betting over the wins and deaths of cocks whose nails would be fitted with sharp razor blades. The owners would feed their cocks with special food to prepare them for such fights. On Sundays, certain pockets in Nagpur witness gambling over such cock fights.

The gambling over bulls fights is now fast attaining popularity in the rural districts and outskirts of the city. A racket is also engaged in bull fights at Shatrapura in Kanhan too, sources said.
