A 20-year-old student of Nagpur University's Laxminarayan Institute of Technology (LIT) committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of his hostel room on Monday evening. Anurag Mehta, second year student of chemical engineering, was the only son of his parents hailing from a well-off Gujarati family from Wani in Yavatmal.
Mehtas could not figure out whether it was depression over failing in the Plant Utility subject by three marks in the third semester or some other reason behind Anurag's act. He had even gone in for revaluation of the paper and results were awaited. Aggrieved father Bhagwanji, a well-known businessman, said that his son had cleared the 12th standard with flying colours. Bhagwanji also stated how Anurag fared well in other competitive examinations and was a topper in studies. Anurag has an 11-year-old sister Shraddha.
"I had even assured to support my son in case he wants to discontinue engineering and return. We have a steady business and property to be looked after. It is unbelievable that he (Anurag) committed suicide," said a distraught Bhagwanji. Anurag had taken admission in LIT in 2009. Initially, he stayed at a private hostel in Gokulpeth before switching to institute's hostel.
Anurag had spoken to his father over cellphone at 8 pm on Monday. He also talked with his mother Sushma. "He wanted money. I had assured to deposit the sum in the bank account so he could withdraw it from the ATM. He later said he would collect it from me at a later date. He also asked me to take the bicycle back. He sounded normal when we spoke. There was no hint that he was readying to end his life," said a shocked father.
Bhagwanji also told TOI that his son was seeing a doctor since last few months for his nervousness. "He would not allow me to come along but took an uncle with him to the doctor. I have no clue what was his exact problem," said Bhagwanji. A hostel source indicated that Anurag was inclined towards medicine but had to settle for engineering, which may have saddened him. There was no confirmation about this as family members said Anurag was sensitive but not suicidal. Pramod Mandiya, Anurag's room partner, was the first to spot the hanging body. He said that Anurag unusually returned from classes early.
"We wanted to go for dinner but he decided to stay back. He was not opening the door in spite of knocking. So, me and another friend peeked from above the door. I spotted the rope first," said a shocked Pramod. The suicide came to fore when students returned from dinner at 9.10 pm. "He was normal the entire day," Pramod said. Anurag used a nylon rope used for drying clothes to hang himself. He used a stool to reach the fan by keeping it on the table. Pramod and another student brought down Anurag's body and rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead. A tuition teacher informed Anurag's father after the incident. Ambazari police was informed by the GMCH police booth. Cops reached the hostel room to check the premises. No suicide note was found. Bright LIT student ends life Anurag Mehta was said to be normal hours before his suicide, though he had taken treatment for some psychological problems recently Anurag had spoken to his father over cellphone at 8 pm on Monday.
