Number of HSC students up, SSC aspirants decrease

The Nagpur division of Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education is witnessing an interesting trend for the last five years. On the one hand the number of students appearing for higher secondary certificate (HSC) examination is increasing; those aspiring to give secondary school certificate (SSC) examination are decreasing. The trend is more or less similar in all the eight divisions of the board, according to senior officials.

Interestingly, 1.61 lakh students had enrolled for the HSC exams, an increase of about 16,000 as compared to last year. Those registered for the SSC went down by about 4,000 students to 1.97 lakh from 2.01 lakh last year.

Board's Nagpur division chairman Chandramani Borkar attributed the change primarily to the largesse of granting 20 marks for practicals of all subjects in SSC and HSC examination that led to 'inflated' results. "Moreover, the failure ratio has significantly reduced which has led to decline in their numbers in SSC. The government's family planning drive has also met with success which had stabililised the population in villages. So, actually, the numbers are getting on lower side. These numbers in SSC and HSC will get stabilised in another couple of years," he told TOI.

He however didn't rule out the possibility that the increasing number of schools offering CBSE/ICSE curriculums in urban areas were attracting students, especially from the middle class. "This may be one of the reasons behind the decrease (in SSC numbers). But in rural areas, these schools are not seen and therefore opening of new schools can't be said to be the primary cause for the decline," he added.

Board secretary for Nagpur division Shriram Chavan stated that it was facing tough time adjusting HSC candidates as their number had increased significantly. "Over 100 new junior colleges have opened in the division in last year. The CBSE/ICSE students come back to the state board for pursuing class XII," he said.

The HSC examination will begin on February 22. The SSC examination starts on March 1.
