Maharashtra PWD and tourism minister Chhagan Bhujbal on Friday lost his cool when asked about his stance on CBI probe into murder of additional collector of Manmad Yashwant Sonawane.
Bhujbal told reporters he never opposed the move to hand over the case to CBI and would quit if proved otherwise. Sonawane was burnt to death by kerosene mafia at Manmad on January 25 after he caught them pilfering fuel from a tanker. The opposition parties have charged the Prithviraj Chavan government with going slow on the matter.
Bhujbal was asked by a section of journalists whether he had opposed CBI probe in Wednesday's cabinet meeting. The senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) reacted sharply saying, "I will resign immediately if proved that I had opposed a CBI probe in Sonawane case. I never opposed it."
A CBI probe in the case was sought by Sonawane's family when Bhujbal visited them. The PWD minister was in the city on Friday to inaugurate a food court, entertainment and recreation plaza at Sakkardara lake. He said the Bharatiya Janata Party-led opposition was politicising the Sonawane case. Interestingly, BJP corporator and NMC standing committee chairman Sandip Joshi was present at the function.
Bhujbal said, "I've faith in the home ministry, which is preparing a proposal to hand over probe to CBI." It is learnt that state home department had already written to the CBI requesting it to take over the case. The CBI is yet to respond to the request. Bhujbal said stringent action should be taken against oil adulteration mafia.
