On April 21, 1960, the late Annasaheb Gokhale and Bapusaheb Kagbhat founded an educational society in Mahal area of Nagpur. The 'sapling,' as it were, as today grown into an imposing tree.
The Central Provinces (CP) and Berar Education Society has metamorphosed into many schools and colleges, churning out brilliant minds right up to post graduate level. When its first school started operations on June 21, 1960, there were just five teachers and 60 students. Today, the society's schools and colleges have over 5,000 students and it is recognised as a leading education house in Vidarbha. Fittingly, on Monday, the society celebrated its golden jubilee on its oldest premises in front of Reshimbagh ground.
"I had no money even to pay my fees. But the teachers in the school paid them for me right up to Std X. I owe my life to this school," Wardha MP Datta Meghe, a proud alumnus, told the huge gathering, setting the tone for the mega celebrations. The event witnessed the presence of the who's who from the city with leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley being the chief guest. BJP national president Nitin Gadkari, Nagpur University vice chancellor Dr Vilas Sapkal, CP & Berar society chairman Balasaheb Mahajan, secretary Ashok Bansod and principal Milind Barapatre shared the dais.
The school has churned out many renowned personalities like marathon runner Charulata Naigaonkar, Dadaji Konddeo award recipient Bhau Kane, resident deputy collector Pramod Bhusari, apart from Meghe who has now as many 25 institutions to his credit including engineering and medical colleges. Many former students made a point to attend the function.
Gadkari recalled his childhood days when he used to play cricket in front of school ground. "I have actually witnessed the metamorphosis of the school," he said and urged the college authorities to start some technical job-oriented courses for the benefit of the students from the area. Lauding the efforts of a teacher named Pande, the BJP president said he had never saw dedicated teacher like him. "Founders have dedicated their life for the school," he said.
Jaitley refused to talk on politics or related issues stating that it was a visit to an educational institution. Even then, he obliquely took a swipe at the Gandhi family stating that the family system has long ended in all other fields including in business and only politics is the field where this system survives till date. "Competition is now global in 21st century and only the fittest can survive. The standards of excellence have risen and there is no place for failure or mediocrity. Those who've competence and capability can go ahead at the top," he said.
Vice-principal Anjali Wachasunder took the audience on a guided tour of the society's history. She said that the society began arts faculty in 1960 followed by commerce in 1962 and post graduate classes in 1970. The junior college began in 1975 and by 1987-88, specialised courses like diploma in business management, MIRPM and Phil classes started. Now, the college operates NET/SET coaching classes and has tied up with YCMOU for short term courses.
