The Nashik-based Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU) will honour legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, 77, with a DLit degree at its 17th convocation ceremony on March 1. Many students from Nagpur centre would be getting their degrees, two of whom are getting gold medals.
IGNOU vice chancellor VN Rajasekharan Pillai will be chief guest while Maharashtra governor K Sankaranarayanan will preside over the function. Guardian minister of Nashik Chhagan Bhujbal, minister for higher and technical education Rajesh Tope, and YCMOU VC R Krishna Kumar will grace the occasion.
Sankaranarayanan, who is also chancellor, will confer DLitt on Bhonsle and Pillai will deliver the convocation address. Nagpur regional director Subhash Belsare informed that 56,418 students across 35 districts will receive the degrees and diplomas. He added that out of eight regional centres, students of Kolhapur brought laurels by bagging six gold medals.
Interestingly, 57 prisoners' students who have completed graduation from YCMOU at prisons all over Maharashtra will also receive degree and diplomas. He said the university has inked a pact with Maharashtra police as well as paramilitary forces like Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and naval dockyard for a variety of preparatory courses.
Belsare pointed out that YCMOU has launched a unique course named MBA (Public Police Management) for the state's police. He said around 3,34,922 dropouts have completed education from 3,500 centres and university has devised a novel diploma course in engineering for the employees can't attend the classes regularly.
Last year, as many as 1,23,974 students belonging to the backward classes and 1,22,242 women benefited from the open learning system of YCMOU. A course has also been developed for the Mumbai dabbawalahs, housemaids, bus, truck and auto rickshaw drivers.
