Former additional director general of National Academy of Direct Taxes and well-known management trainer Mahadeo Shastri on Tuesday committed suicide at his Shubham apartments, Ram Nagar, residence. Sixty seven year old Shastri apparently took the extreme step distressed by his chronic insomnia and other ailments. He hanged himself with a cable to the ceiling fan in the afternoon.
Shastri was currently working as executive director of training and development with Raisoni Group of Institutions. Shastri ended his life after his wife, Annapurni, principal of Bhavan's school, Wathoda branch, left home around 12.30 pm. The incident came to light when she returned about an hour later got no response after knocking repeatedly. "Getting worried, she immediately informed her brother, N R Ramkrishnan, who then broke open the door of the apartment," said PSI Wasekar who investigated the spot.
They were shocked to see Shastri's body hanging at their daughter, Manaswini's room. "The bedroom door was left open and he had used the cable kept in spare to hang himself," added Wasekar. The neighbours informed the Ambazari police. Cops also found a suicide note written by Shastri kept on a table. In the note, he said no one was responsible for his act. "I don't know whether what I am doing is right or wrong. Since I am having difficulty in getting to sleep, I am very depressed. I don't want to live life of a handicapped person," he wrote. In the note, Shastri also asked his wife to be strong, a cop said.
The relatives told police that for several months, Shastri was facing difficulty getting sleep and was suffering from other ailments. He had recently been admitted to a private hospital following respiratory problems. Everybody including his relatives, neighbours and his numerous friends were shocked by his act. They were left wondering how a tough, well-qualified, and socially active man took such a step.
Shastri had a two long stints with NADT finally retiring as its additional DG in 2000. He was also an adviser on behalf of Government of India to Government of Uzbekistan for one month in 1994. Shastri later joined the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Nagpur centre, as director and ran Bhavan's management college. He was also responsible for expansion of the Bhavan's schools and introduced teacher training programmes.
His funeral will be at Ambazari crematorium at 10.30am on Wednesday.
