The prestigious Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) not just failed to take stern action against alleged raggers who abused and thrashed third year students but police sources have said that some VNIT staffers might have been present when the alleged incident took place.
Sources revealed that as many as 70 final year students mercilessly assaulted two third year metallurgy students -- Jayant Kumar and Neeraj Shavarna - in front of as many as six VNIT officials including chief hostel warden Aniruddh Ghare, students dean SS Umare, hostel manager Nikhil Chingalwar and a couple of lecturers who could not do anything in front of huge crowd. While Kumar had filed a police complaint on January 5 itself Shavarna is being treated as a witness. Both of them refused to comment despite repeated attempts, apparently fearing backlash from seniors and college authorities.
The Ambazari police had on Thursday arrested six students for alleged ragging under section 4 of Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1999. They were also charged with physical assault and threatening the victims under Sections 323, 504, and 109 read with 34 of IPC. Entire incident brought much disgrace to the only NIT in Maharashtra.
The incident took place on January 5 and the police complaint was also lodged on the same day, but the cops only acted on January 28 after a panel headed by senior mathematics lecturer AG Deshpande reportedly indicted the senior students for ragging and threatening the victims and recommended filing of FIR. This special enquiry panel was constituted by officiating director Chintamani Moghe. Moghe too couldn't be contacted even after many attempts.
While Ghare refused to comment and asked TOI not to call him, Umare denied the charges. He, however, admitted that final year students were thrashing the victims when they reached the spot. "It was just four to five students who were beating up the victims when we reached. We tried our best to save them. Had we not reached, the condition would have been worse," he said.
Umare added that college had rusticated Tanay Mahajan (22), an architecture student from Pune, and cancelled his registration. He however failed to explain why same action was not being taken against five other accused students. The college authorities have expelled all six from the hostels and debarred them from appearing in any of the training and placement activities on the day they were arrested. Abhishek Mishra (21) from Kolkata, Pranav Dikshit from Agra, Gauravdip Chakraborty (20) from Ashish Nagar, Pallav Jha (20) from Rajasthan and Ankit Chhabra (20) from Punjab were other accused students named in FIR . The first three are from final year mechanical branch, Pallav is from chemical technology while Ankit is final year civil engineering student.
Additional commissioner (administration) Chiranjivi Prasad told TOI that the victims first approached him on the day of complaint. He asked Ambazari police to take up their complaint on priority. "It reminded me of ragging incident in Himachal Pradesh where the victim had committed suicide. I would advise students not to indulge in such acts and spoil their future. In fact, they should swear that they should maintain cordial atmosphere in educational institutions," he said.
