With the railway budget to be presented later this month, city MP Vilas Muttemwar has strongly taken up with railway minister Mamata Banerjee the demand for introducing new trains like a Duronto between Nagpur and New Delhi, increasing the frequency of trains to Indore and Ahmedabad and developing Ajni as a world class station.
At the last budget, Banerjee had announced the Duronto to Delhi but the train has remained a non-starter due to paucity of rakes.
In a letter written to the railway minister as a follow up of his discussions over the demands of people from in and around Nagpur, the city MP has tried to convince her the need for a better connectivity for Nagpur which is emerging as the fastest growing city and also as a business and trading hub linked to important centres of the nation in all four directions.
"Nagpur junction caters to over 40 lakh people. Its importance as an economic centre will only get an impetus with projects like Mihan-SEZ lined up here. But people here are facing lot of hardship due to paucity of accommodation on trains. I have already raised these issues in the past with you and your predecessor and hope these demands of the people will be met favourably," wrote Muttemwar.
Figuring high on his wish list sent to the railway minister is introduction of a Duronto train between Nagpur and the that trade and business in the region was suffering because of inadequate connectivity with centres in the South like Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai and there was need for exclusive train from Nagpur on these routes.
About the earlier proposal sanctioned by the ministry two years ago to develop Nagpur as a world class railway station, Muttemwar has stressed that instead of the old and heritage building that may not be allowed to be modernized, the railways should consider developing Ajni railway station as world class.
"A lot of land is available at Ajni and it should be developed to relieve stress on Nagpur junction. Also, the 125-year-old Ajni railway bridge needs to be replaced with a new one," he has demanded. national Capital. "A new fast train exclusively on this route deserves a serious consideration," he said in the letter.
Increasing the frequency of Duronto to Mumbai from the current three days to all seven days, increasing of frequency from once a week to daily for Trishatabdi Express running between Nagpur and Indore and also the Prerna Express between Nagpur and Ahmedabad also figure in his list of demands.
Similarly Muttemwar has sought a Duronto between Nagpur and Pune and running the present Nagpur-Pune train daily instead of thrice a week. The MP has also pointed that trade and business in the region was suffering because of inadequate connectivity with centres in the South like Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai and there was need for exclusive train from Nagpur on these routes.
