Performing on a larger platform can do wonders for participants. Nagpur University's 'Yuvarang' is doing such wonders for participants, most of who hail from rural areas, for last few years. This year, the popular festival will be conducted from February 7 to 10 at NU's Buty Hall.
According to NU director of students welfare, Ashvin Chandel, the three-day festival being organised every year by the Students' Council, has transformed many lives. Participants were selected for doing courses at prestigious National School of Drama (NSD) in Delhi.
Some are working in different schools as music and drama teachers, he said. Yuvarang tests the students in fields of music, dance, theatre, fine arts, and literary events such as quiz, debates, and poetry.
Students' Council president Pradeep Patle said that they were expecting about 1,500 students from over 800 colleges coming under NU to participate. "We've received entries from 50 colleges. Last year, 168 colleges had taken part," he said.
NU has earmarked Rs 4 lakh for the festival, said Chandel. "The event would be conducted as per the guidelines of All India Universities. So, there would not be any film-based dances or songs," he said.
He said that the Students' Council would felicitate exdirector of students welfare, Arun Patil, who was at the helm of affairs for decades and NU sports director Dhananjay Welukar for his contribution to sports.
The festival would be inaugurated by senior journalist Shripad Aprajit at 9.30 am on Monday. Registrar Mahesh Yenkie, controller of examinations (CoE) SP Kane, mathematics head KC Deshmukh and Ishwar Deshmukh College principal Anilkumar Karvande will grace the occasion. Vice chancellor Vilas Sapkal would be the chief guest for the valedictory function on Thursday. The guests will distribute prizes to winners.
