Nagpur Municipal Corporation officials seem to have finally woken up from deep slumber after the death of a one-and-half year old girl, Trishala Dhoke, who drowned in an uncovered manhole in Rambagh area.
Just a day, after ToI highlighted that there approximately 8000 pits from a total of 1.5 lakh including manholes and drains without covers are becoming death traps for vehicle users and citizens, the NMC released a list of numbers and names of authorities and asked the citizens to register complaints regarding open manholes and drains in their area.
Recently, the High Court too had directed the civic body to designate an officer to address all grievances relating to open manholes. The HC had also directed the NMC to publish the telephone number of the officer in newspapers so that people could file complaints. Accordingly, now citizens can register complaints regarding uncovered manholes and drains by calling NMC's emergency cell number 0712-2567777 or by telephoning the respective zonal officials.
