Work for linguistic identity: RR Patil

No culture or language can be promoted or destroyed by the governing powers. Had it been possible, the Mughal or English rule over Maharashtra for centuries would have resulted in Urdu, Persian or English dominance. One must work for one's own linguistic identity rather than attacking other languages, like Hindi or others," said home minister RR Patil on Sunday. He was speaking at the valedictory programme of the three-day literary conference organised by the Vidarbha Sahitya Sangh, at Yashwant College, Wardha.

Without naming any political party for having a linguistic communal agenda, Patil spoke about the identity of Marathi without prejudice to other Indian languages. The home minister expressed the need to enrich the language, which he said is a continuous process in English, so it adopts words in use in several cultures. Patil also spoke about diversity of linguistic identity, even in the Marathi sphere from Vidarbha to Konkan.

The conference on the 60th anniversary of Vidarbha Sahitya Sangh (VSS) passed some resolutions of social commitment, indicating the close relations between literature and society. With several other resolutions, the conference proposed an international Marathi university at Wardha. The resolutions also requested the government to provide a fearless environment for honest administrators and RTI activists, which the home minister assured to fulfil. The conference also passed a resolution to arrange for scholarships for research in social issues, like farmers' suicide, environment, growing graph of violence and others.

Among several other resolutions, the conference also demanded an acceleration of work on the proposed Ambedkar Foundation at Nagpur and amendment of the mistakes in the 22nd volume of Dr Ambedkar's writings. A fund for the Vidarbha Literature Association and its building was also demanded, for which Patil promised positive action from the government.
