It’s as big as it gets for Ireland. A World Cup match at Eden Gardens. The Irish hope to rise to the occasion.
South Africa are one of the favourites to win the Cup and have momentum on their side after beating India at Nagpur. Even without AB de Villiers, who picked up a left thigh strain during his innings at Nagpur against India, they are a formidable side and may be a little too strong for Ireland to pull off an upset. But it’s an opportunity for William Porterfield and his boys to once again show the world that they are ready for the next level.
Only two points from four matches notwithstanding, Ireland so far have given a good account of themselves. They shocked England and ran the other big teams pretty close. They still have a theoretical chance to qualify for the quarterfinals provided they win their remaining two group league matches and the other results fall in their favour. But there won’t be many who would like to give them a chance, especially on an Eden Gardens wicket where Dale Steyn & Co. can make the ball rear. Porterfield, however, is ready. He feels that the underdogs tag will help them play freely and without fear.
