MEd students storm NU for 7-month delay in results

TOI NEWS
In the second such incident within a week, students stormed Nagpur University with their grievances, highlighting the lethargy and mismanagement in the institution. Nearly 35 aggrieved students of masters of education (MEd) wanted to meet vice chancellor Vilas Sapkal since the results of their summer exam conducted in June last year have not been declared till date.

TOI had reported on March 9 about NU officials' apathy in not declaring results even seven months after the exam, due to which many students were on the verge of losing prospective job opportunities. Late declaration of summer and winter exam results and revaluation has been affecting students badly.

The MEd students were made to wait for over two hours on Monday, before they could meet the VC. According to them, no one took any cognisance of their troubles, and they were meted out shabby treatment. Finally, the VC just gave them a cold assurance and blamed their colleges for their plight.

Sapkal reportedly told them to give a second representation to officiating controller of examinations (CoE) Siddharth Kane. "Earlier too we have given several such representations, but no notice has been taken. What will happen with this one," the students asked.

Though the VC was not available for his comments, PRO Sanjay Bahekar said that Sapkal assured the students that their results would be declared at the earliest. He justified the university's stand, that it was the college which had failed to appoint regular teachers, thus delaying the paper valuation.

The students who returned disappointed said that it was NU's responsibility not to give affiliation to such colleges without approved teachers or principals. "How can they shift blame on us? In the first place, why did they accept our synopsis without signatures of approved teachers? The NU should have told us in advance not to take admission in such colleges," the students said.

They added that out of 18 colleges, NU has only declared the results of three or four colleges, while the rest have been kept pending for unknown reasons. These include colleges owned and run by educationists who are also on NU's management and academic councils, including Baban Taywade and Abhijit Wanjari. Except NU's PG department of education, all private colleges charge hefty fees to the tune of Rs 1 lakh for the MEd course.

The norm for declaration of results is 45 days. In this case, it's over seven months, but the innocent students are suffering. To add to their woes, there is no supplementary exam for them, which means that if they fail in the exam, they've to wait for one full year to clear their remaining subjects.

Last time, the CoE had justified the delay by saying that the dissertations were not checked since their respective colleges failed to appoint approved teachers as guides.
