It's now two and half months since new vice-chancellor Vilas Sapkal took charge of Nagpur University.

At that time, NU was in doldrums with top five statutory posts being vacant and being looked after by part time officials. With his arrival things were expected to rapidly improve. Eighty days down the line, academicians feel, nothing is changed.

If NU's failure to declare results of last year MEd exam even seven months later is any indication, the institution continues to ail. Even Laxminarayan Institute of Technology (LIT), once pride of the university, is in a shambles. The students are suffering due to late declaration of results and revaluation results are coming after main exam is over.

The new VC has not even named a pro-VC and seems in no hurry to do so. Absence of pro-VC, who heads the all-important exam section, is making matters worse for students. As many as three other statutory posts- registrar, controller of examinations (CoE) and board of college and university development ( BCUD) director- are having officiating incumbents. Senior lecturer at LIT Mahesh Yenkie is looking after registrar's charge while Siddharth Kane is the officiating CoE. Important statutory bodies like academic and management councils and board of examinations (BoE) have not been constituted till date after their expiry on August 31 last year.

Even the senate polls conducted recently were marred when a DNC lecturer Pradip Hadke had cast a bogus vote. No action was taken against him. The board of studies (BoS) polls which should have been conducted before December 31 were deferred and now would be held on April 28. Until BoS are constituted, senate and other bodies can't be constituted.

Academicians said that the academic and management council would now be constituted only by June. In general the university is operating with half the posts vacant for years together. The situation was already chaotic when VC SN Pathan was in-charge. After his term ended on July 13 last year, it has only worsened, they added.

Senior academician Balraj Aher blasted the NU administration for the mess. "Any vacancy affects operations. In NU's case, top four officials are absent and you can see the result." He said Sapkal should have expedited the appointment of at least the pro-VC who would have helped him in administration and also streamlined the exam system. TOI tried hard to get comments from VC through university PRO but there was no response from his office.
