The state government will request the governor to intervene in the alleged sexual harassment case in the University of Mysore, even as the varsity on Tuesday suspended the suspect, professor Shivabasavaiah of the department of Zoology.
The university registrar, PS Nayak, suspended the professor stating he had failed to respond to the summons of the varsity, and appear before it for an internal inquiry.
A woman scholar, who attempted suicide on Saturday last, had accused professor Shivabasavaiah of sexually harassing her. The scholar had been researching under his guidance.
Meanwhile in Bangalore, the issue reverberated in the state legislative council on the second consecutive day with the members demanding the intervention of governor and chancellor of the university HR Bhardwaj in the case.
The members asked for a special inquiry against the professor as well as the vice-chancellor of the university, VG Talwar. They alleged that the vice-chancellor had failed to respond to the victim’s complaint.
“The state government should write a letter to the governor in this regard,” said Janata Dal (Secular) leader MC Nanaiah.
Leader of the House VS Acharya said the government would write to the governor in this regard, since the higher education department or the state government had limited powers to conduct inquiries against vice-chancellors.
Member of the House and educationist Prof PV Krishna Bhat advocated the setting up a special court to deal with such cases in universities.
“The case in Mysore University is one of very few cases which has surfaced. There are many such cases which go unreported, as women students lacked a protective mechanism,” he said.
