Nagpur to be India’s Tiger capital

nagpur tigar
The capital of India is New Delhi but, Mumbai is known as the Financial Capital and Kolkata as the cultural capital. Indications are there that Nagpur in Vidarbha district of Maharashtra might soon be named the Tiger Capital. The Chief Minister of Maharashtra Prithviraj Chavan likes the idea and he wants to apprise the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan SinghManmohan Singh on the proposal.

More than 250 out of the 1400 odd tigers in India are in the Vidarbha region. Already there are a number of tiger reserves and sanctuaries in Vidarbha which would justify such an action. The Tadoba Tiger project is located 160 Km from Nagpur and the Bor sanctuary at a distance of only 60 Km. Moreover, the Navegaon and the Nagzira wildlife sanctuaries as well as the Kanha National park are all located near Nagpur. The Kanha is 200 Km away.

Tigers attract foreign tourists. An estimated 80 million of them visit India every year to see the wild cats roaming freely in the jungles. The Maharashtra government feels that it would be profitable to promote tourism like Tiger Safari keeping the Tigers as the backdrop. It would add fillip to the Save the Tiger project and open up avenues of tourism related employment and business in the region.
