An entire building of Nelson Mandela International Students Hostel of Nagpur University meant for foreign students has been lying locked for years even though other students in Nagpur university hostel are struggling for space.
TOI had reported on the pathetic conditions prevailing at NU's undergraduate hostel near Law College Square. There are almost over 100 extra students staying at this hostel where facilities are nothing more than a farce. However, TOI has found that the Nelson Mandela hostel in nearby Bharat Nagar had one building lying vacant. TOI had also highlighted the plight of foreign students studying in Nagpur University and staying at this hostel as far back as on January 6, 2008. However, there is no change in the situation.
When TOI visited the Nelson Mandela hostel campus, officials refused to speak citing NU circular that authorizes only the PRO to give information to the media. But a highly placed official in NU, who did not wish to be named, confirmed the conditions at the hostel. One building has 16 beds while the other has 40 that can very easily be extended to 50 without inconvenience to inmates. However, this second building has been lying vacant for the last four years. It is equipped with 20 bathrooms, the source added.
"There are just 16-odd students staying at Nelson Mandela hostel now in the main building. I don't understand why the other building is not being used to accommodate extra domestic students," said the official. NU, that once had a thriving foreign students community, has seen their numbers dwindle as its standards have steadily fallen.
When TOI visited the hostel, it found that dogs had made the surrounding area their home. Many of these dogs also freely enter the main hostel building as well. TOI tried to get in touch with NU spokesperson Sanjay Bahekar on this issue but he did not return our calls. NU VC Vilas Sapkal too chose to keep silent.
"There is no full time co-ordinator for the hostel. A professor who teaches in the city has to handle this additional responsibility of student admission at the Nelson Mandela hostel. Only one full-time employee has is working there for the last couple of years," the source added.
