UK co opens artificial limb centre in city

If by some misfortune like accident or disease you lose a limb, you need not now run to a metro anymore for an artificial limb.

A state of art artificial limb facility would be available in city by the end of this week. Endolite India Ltd is starting an artificial limb centre in Byramji town which would be formally inaugurated on April 3.

The centre will be able to not just support patients who have undergone all kinds of limb amputations but will also be providing training to patients in proper use of the support system. The company will have both a customized fabrication unit and service centre. It is the second such unit to come up in city in the last three months. Otto Bock Healthcare India Ltd was the first to start a centre in December last year.

The company was offering anything and everything from simple knee joints costing Rs 10,000 to customised the 'microprocessor' controlled joints at a cost of Rs 7 lakh or more. "We have artificial limb units for patients from all economic backgrounds. If someone can afford a high-end expensive model why should s/he not use one," Gautam Jain, head, clinical service, of Endolite told reporters on Tuesday. He said Nagpur was the 35{+t}{+h} centre of UK based company in country.

The company planned to provide special training to all patients using its limb units. "Once the person is registered with us it is our responsibility to conduct regular follow ups for right use of equipment. Every user should be able to use the unit with minimum energy and get maximum mobility. We should be able to give every client a limb based on physical activity," said Abhinav Tripathi, senior prosthetist and orthotist and company's city in-charge.

For high activity users like players, special limb units are available having modular systems with dynamic alignment that allows faster and swifter movement. Persons interested in additional cosmetic finishing can also look forward to units matching skin colour having almost natural look. The units are also suited for all types of surfaces like uneven road, ramps, and staircases.
