Monday is the D-Day for the few who have been busy lobbying for the standing committee chairperson's post in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). The second most important designation after the mayor, the post is most coveted as it translates into immediate 'money' power and authority.
With NMC elections barely ten months away, the new chairperson will have a key role to play in the coming days. The general body meeting on Monday for the election of 16 members of the standing committee will thus be 'power-packed' with none of the parties missing the chance to put their 'best soldier' forward. In short, it could be a last-minute effort to garner as much publicity as possible.
The core committee of BJP comprising MLAs Devendra Fadnavis, Vikas Kumbhare, Krishna Khopde and Sudhakarrao Deshmukh and city BJP president Anil Sole met on Sunday evening. The five selected names remain Baba Maind, Sandeep Joshi, Sandeep Gavai, Prakash Totwani and Avinash Thakre. According to sources, present chairperson Sandeep Joshi stands a good chance of being re-elected but there is also a possibility of health committee chief Baba Maind being selected. One of the MLAs is lobbying hard for Maind, said sources.
Sources in Congress informed that the two strong contenders were Sujata Kombade and Arun Davre but the final decision will be taken by secretary of All India Congress Committee Anees Ahmed and state minister of animal husbandry Nitin Raut after they arrive on Monday morning.
BJP leaders are said to be very happy with Joshi's performance. Joshi has not only played an active role in the NMC by clearing several key developmental projects but has also contributed to the treasury box.
On the other hand, Maind, who switched over from the Congress, has become influential these days. He has the experience too. He was the standing panel chief during Congress' tenure in 1992-93.
A meeting of NCP corporators held a meeting at Ravi Bhavan at 7pm on Sunday to choose their candidate. Food and civil supplies minister Anil Deshmukh will announce the name of NCP candidate on Monday morning, said sources.
Following the amendment in the City of Nagpur Corporation Act, the 16-member standing committee is now nominated on the basis of proportional strength of political parties in the house.
As per the present party strength, BJP can nominate eight, Shiv Sena one, NCP one, Congress four and others two. The BJP and Shiv Sena alliance have 74 (highest) members in the house while the Congress-led Secular Democratic Front has only 35 members.
