The Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) declared the results for the two board exams it conducts across the country; ICSE for Xth Class and ISC for the XIIth. In Nagpur, both exams were topped by girls with the boys not even having a chance to secure the runner-up slot.
Asma Azad, a student of MSB Educational Institute, topped the ICSE exams with 93 per cent marks, while Apeksha Shrivastava, a student of CDS School, topped the ISC with 90 per cent marks.
CDS principal Kenneth Mendonça says his school took extra efforts to make sure their students did not fall behind. "At the start of the academic year we identified the weaker students and studied the subjects due to which their marks were being dragged down. Then we took extra coaching classes for these students, all free of cost on the school premises to help them academically," said Mendonca.
Principal of MSB Educational institute, Razia Hussain said, "The credit for success has to go to both teachers and students as it was the students' hard work under the guidance of teachers."
According to CISCE's addl secy Gerry Arathoon, girls have trumped the boys across the country as far as passing percentage is concerned. "In ICSE, 99.15 per cent of the total girls who appeared have passed as compared to 98.19 per cent of the boys. Things are not different at ISC either with 98.40 per cent of the total girls passing as compared to 96.30 per cent of the boys" said Arathoon.
This year, CISCE made a major change to the way answer papers were evaluated for the ICSE. CDS principal Mendonça says, "Earlier, our teachers would go to Delhi, collect the answer sheets, come back to Nagpur and evaluate them. From this year, teachers had to spend ten days in Delhi itself for paper evaluation." This year's ICSE results saw an increase in the percentage of students passing by a marginal 0.30 per cent as compared to last year.
In Nagpur, there are three schools (CDS School, MSB Educational Institute and SDA School) which offer the ICSE pattern and only two of them (CDS, SDA) also have ISC (XIIth). While all students appearing for ICSE in Nagpur cleared the exam, four students (out of 39) were unsuccessful in ISC.
Across India, about 1.2 lakh students appeared for the ICSE while 57,487 students appeared for the ISC.
