NEWS:- Fire department attends 54 calls

Even though pre-monsoon rains brought some relief from the sweltering heat and humidity on Tuesday night, gutsy winds in some parts of the city resulted in crashing of trees and some disruption in normal life. Uprooted trees kept firemen on their toes. On Tuesday, they had to rush to different areas to restore traffic or electricity. Firemen have attended more than 54 calls since May 17.

Chief fire officer Chandrashekhar Jadhav informed TOI that most cases pertained to tree felling due to gusty winds accompanied by rains in east Nagpur. He, however, said that his men also faced the public wrath. A case in point was near Hanuman temple in Shukruwari area where a huge old tree was uprooted due to heavy winds on Tuesday. As similar incidents were reported across the city, firemen reached late due to their hectic schedule.

"We had to face public wrath as a result of our delay. But we were helpless as the situation was very hectic. We faced shortage of manpower due to enormous number of complaints in the city," said a fireman.

Several hoardings also fell on the busy Central Avenue. Fortunately, nobody was injured in these mishaps, said the CFO.

Another accident took place at the university's ground where the Career Expo exhibition is on since the last two days. The dome of the set-up collapsed due to the heavy winds on Tuesday night. "The complete dome fell down and our whole set-up got ruined. We have temporarily shifted the exhibition and are re-building the whole set-up," informed Pramod Batra, the organiser of the event.

There was also a fire accident that took place at Eros Motors, Ghat Road, on Wednesday. Fire broke out at 10 am and a fire tender reached the spot. Within minutes, firemen brought the blaze under control. The cause of the fire is believed to be short-circuiting. The company suffered a loss of Rs 7,000.
