UNIVERSITY NEWS :- Nearly 9K engg seats may remain vacant in NU

Last year, over 22,000 engineering seats were vacant at the end of the admission process in Maharashtra, with some 6,000 in Nagpur University alone. This year nearly that many seats, if not more, are expected to remain vacant, if one goes by the applications received by Nagpur division office of directorate of technical education (DTE). If that is the case, many colleges may be forced to shut some branches offered by them.

Joint technical education director RS Naidu said about 12,233 aspirants have submitted their forms till Tuesday, the second-last day of filling forms. Nagpur University has 21,721 seats in 58 engineering colleges. With just a day left, it is highly unlikely that so many more students will apply for an engineering seat.

Highly placed sources at DTE said that many colleges in NU had applied for increase in intake capacity, and were awaiting the AICTE nod. There is also a proposal for a new engineering college. With this, around 1,500-2,000 seats could be added to the existing capacity in this academic session.

Of the total applicants, over a thousand are expected to move to reputed colleges in Mumbai and Pune, while some will prefer a seat in the six autonomous institutions. Moreover, many aspirants fail to meet basic eligibility criteria for getting admission, while some may face problems in securing certificates like caste validity certificates and domicile. If ratio of seats and applicants is considered, it's likely that nearly 9,000 seats will remain vacant in NU colleges alone.

"The situation is more or less similar in other universities, and in pharmacy and polytechnic admissions," Naidu told TOI. He attributed the trend to jump in number of seats due to opening of many new colleges over the last few years.

Statewide, over 1.14 lakh seats are up for grabs in 309 colleges, which will touch 1.20 lakh after new permits by AICTE. In 2009, 83,000 seats at 297 colleges were available through MHT-CET.

Over, 2.54 lakh applicants appeared for the engineering entrance exam this year. From Nagpur division, comprising six districts, 32,493 cleared the exam. Ironically, not even half of them have applied for seats so far.

A senior NU official said that last year many colleges approached them to close some branches since they failed to get even a single student and this year too a similar exercise is expected.

JIT vice principal Surendra Gole however said that popularity of the field was not on the decline but huge increase in number of seats had led to this situation. "Engineering still provides highest salaries across all sectors and graduates are in tremendous demand," he said.
