NAGPUR PhD entrance 2011 - Over 1K appear for NU's 1st PhD entrance

Over 1K appear for NU's 1st PhD entrance
After many hiccups, the Nagpur University on Thursday successfully conducted its first ever PhD entrance exam (PET). Over, 1,100 candidates appeared for it in four centres. Many candidates have registered for Marathi medium exam that NU will conduct in December.

Controller of Exam (CoE), Siddarth Kane said, "Students did not face any problem during the exam. Also an option for answering in the regional language has been made available to them so it was completely hassle free. But the exam in Marathi medium will be held in December. Tomorrow 1,120 students would be appearing."

Although 3,000 candidates registered for the entrance exam, there were some absentees during the morning shift. Interestingly, many candidates among those 2,600 aggrieved students who had applied for the PhD registration since last couple of years but were denied exemption from the exam, appeared for the exam on Thursday.

The exam is being conducted online in four batches from morning to evening at every centre and about 280 students can appear simultaneously. It is being conducted with the help of Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL) from July 7 to 10. The centres for the exam are the NU campus library, Ramdeobaba Engineering College, Dhanwate National College (DNC) and Shivaji Science College.

The NU officials decided, on Wednesday, to conduct the PhD entrance test in Marathi after Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) stormed the university premises demanding Marathi option for the benefit of candidates who're not comfortable with the English language.

Earlier, the students faced problems in getting their I-cards as NU server crashed. The NU administration then directed the aspirants to take print out of their I-cards from the new website 'oasis.mkcl.org/nupet'. Ironically, both NU as well as MKCL officials, responsible for maintaining the NU website, had not anticipated such huge response.
