PhD entrance in Marathi demanded
The problems with first PhD entrance test (PET) continue to haunt Nagpur University. On Tuesday, a delegation of Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) stormed its premises demanding that PET be conducted in Marathi for candidates not comfortable with English language.
The MNVS candidates led by divisional head Mangesh Duke discussed the issue with Board of College and university (BCUD) director Arvind Chaudhari as vice-chancellor Vilas Sapkal was not in office. Chaudhary reportedly assured them that the NU administration would consider the demand seriously.
Controller of examinations Siddharth Kane told TOI it was possible to conduct the exam in Marathi medium but it will take some time. "We will take a final decision only after consulting the experts. I think, it will not be much of a problem," he said. According to him, NU will accept applications from all candidates but those who don't want to give the exam in English can wait. "First, we will conduct the regular exam from July 7 to 10 and then come out with a solution. Some changes in software will have to be made. The final decision will be taken by the VC," he clarified.
Earlier, MNVS activists highlighted the plight faced by students pursuing arts and commerce courses in the university stating that they faced numerous problems while dealing with English language. Citing their successful agitation of introducing Marathi in railway board exams, the activists warned of intensifying their agitation if their demand was not met.
Meanwhile, the fate of 2,600 candidates whose application for registration had been pending since last two years continues to hang in balance. Even the academicians question the logic of NU administration making them appear for the entrance test. According to them, students who had completed all formalities as per old rules could not be compelled to undergo entrance exam as per new rules. "Why should they suffer for dlay on NU's," asked an academician who didn't wish to be named.
