Nagpur University removes PhD guide facing harassment rap
Two doctor of philosophy (PhD) aspirants who had lodged a complaint of mental harassment and threatening by their guide finally got justice after persistently pursuing the matter with Nagpur University. Vice-chancellor Vilas Sapkal removed former head of department (HoD) Shyam Bhoga as guide of students who had filed the complaint.

TOI first reported on May 8 how PhD guides in the university exploited their students. The newspaper had reported that even two months after lodging the complaint, the university had failed to take any action. Registrar Mahesh Yenkie confirmed the development stating that the decision was taken as an enquiry was underway against Bhoga. "Bhoga himself stated he had no problem with the move. Now the girls will pursue their theses with Physics HoD Sanjeev Moharil," he said.

After first complaint, Bhoga allegedly continued to threaten the girls and also barred them from conducting practicals at the department laboratory. The victims dispatched three letters to Moharil on April 25, 29 and May 4 and finally to University registrar on May 4 but no action was taken. They continued to be humiliated and were not allowed to enter the laboratory apparently on guide's instructions. Bhoga though declined to comment stating that he didn't know anything about the complaint. The girls, copies of whose letters are with TOI, claimed they were facing immense hardships as inaction by the officials was leading to wastage of money, time and studies. According to them, Bhoga proclaimed that he owned the lab and its instruments while banning their entry into the lab. They claimed they were yet to receive their fellowships despite various requests. They were registered students and had paid fees for conducting practicals. They added that the senior lecturer allegedly demanded a blank cheque from them and warned them he would not allow them to submit their PhD submissions.
