Nagpur City News -Activists in city hail Nagpur electricity ombudsman’s verdict

President of the Sajag Grahak Manch has urged the MD of MSEDCL to recover the compensation awarded to five farmers from the salaries of employees responsible for the delay

Activists in the city have welcomed the recent judgment of the electricity ombudsman, Nagpur, who had directed the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) to give a compensation of Rs 1.16 lakh each to five farmers.

The farmers had complained that they could not run their pumps for irrigation in 2011 from June 28 to October 5, owing to a defunct transformer.

Hailing the verdict, Vivek Velankar, President of the Sajag Grahak Manch has urged the Managing director of MSEDCL to ensure that the compensation is not given from MSEDCL bill collection but recovered from the salaries of employees responsible for the delay in correcting the snag.

The electricity ombudsman in the order on October 19 awarded a compensation of Rs 1,16,400 to each farmer to compensate for their loss.

These agricultural consumers in Nagpur use motor pumps to irrigate their lands near the Wardha river.

The power supply is provided by MSEDCL distribution transformer. In this case the transformer had failed to function on June 28, 2011 and was replaced on October 5, 2011. During this period, there was no electric supply to work the pumps and the farmers had claimed compensation on account of failure by MSEDCL to meet the standards of performance under MERC (Standard of Performance of Distribution Licensee…..) Regulations, 2005.
