Some student organizations, including Vidyapeeth Vidyarthi Sangram Parishad (VVSP), have appealed to Nagpur University vice-chancellor Vilas Sapkal to ensure that colleges coming under it -- both its own and affiliated -- should provide adequate security to its students. The organisations cited sensational murder of engineering student Monica Kirnapure that sent shockwaves across the city and also raised question mark over law and order situation in city. Currently, VVSP is running NU's Students' Council.
VVSP chief Manmohan Bajpayee along with other activists held a marathon meeting with Sapkal over the issue and suggested various measures to prevent such incidents. These includes proper complaint and counselling centres in colleges. The deceased was a third year student of Rajshree Mulak Engineering College for Women at Nandanvan.
Bajpayee also pointed out that due to late declaration of exam and revaluation results, students were frustrated and under tremendous stress. He stated that in such cases the young minds were prone to indulge in violent activities or take extreme step of ending their lives. The delegation insisted on opening students facilitation centres at various NU premises including administrative block, exam section and campus.
The delegation also met with city commissioner of police Ankush Dhanvijay on the issue. It demanded that police should provide security around educational institutions. They also expressed concern over growing crime graph of city and decreasing fear of law and order among the youngsters. The CP reportedly assured to take steps for safety in and around the premises of school and colleges.
Students council chairman Pradeep Patle, Pankaj Hadke, Yashodhan Waghmare, Ritesh Ganar and other activists were part of the delegation.
