A syndicate meeting of Bangalore University (BU) was disrupted on Wednesday, after senior member KV Acharya, who created a ruckus during a meeting last week, created a furore again.
The BU on Wednesday had called for a special syndicate meeting to get approval for budget allocation. KV Acharya, a government nominee, who was supposed to apologise to the syndicate for his misbehaviour during the last meeting, created a furore by stating that he did not receive the letter for the meeting on time.
KV Acharya had been allowed to participate in Wednesday’s syndicate meeting, following the intervention of higher education minister VS Acharya.
However, as BU had to approve some urgent resolutions like budget allocations, local inquiry committee (LIC) reports and salaries which it has to forward to the government by March 31, the meeting continued. Thereafter, KV Acharya walked out of the meeting room and staged a protest outside.
A statement from BU said, “Another member K Puttaraju raised the issue about last syndicate resolution on KV Acharya, which directed him to apologise for using foul language against vice-chancellor N Prabhu Dev and other members. However, the vice-chancellor informed the members about the letter from the higher education minister and allowed the meeting to continue. But KV Acharya started shouting in the meeting and walked out of the hall.”
Meanwhile, the higher education minister decided to form LICs who will visit the colleges for renewal of affiliation/fresh affiliation etc., for the year 2011-12. The syndicate by a majority decision authorised the vice-chancellor to constitute the committees for inspection of colleges and submit their reports.
Accordingly, 30 LICs will be constituted, which will be visiting 30 colleges. Each LIC would comprise four members, including teaching faculty and academic council members. However, no syndicate member will be part of the LICs as per a government order. The syndicate discussed at length whether its members should be part of the LIC or not. Later, the syndicate, by majority decided to go with the government order, though some members expressed dissent and wanted time.
Since the reports had to be sent to the government by March 31, it was decided to abide by the government order and the requirement of the Karnataka State University Act.
The syndicate also resolved to adopt the government order with regard to the revision of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) pay scales and enhancement of age for AICTE teachers from 60 to 62 years for implementation in Bangalore University.
