Ensure public debate on Lokpal Bill: ABVP

Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the BJP, on Monday called for a public hearing on the Lokpal Bill, for which social activist Anna Hazare observed a four-day fast at New Delhi recently. His agitation had evoked a massive response all over the country, forcing the government to agree to the people's demands and set up a committee to draft the Lokpal Bill.

"The government should ensure a public debate on the national level before accepting the draft of the Lokpal bill from the panel constituted for the purpose," ABVP general secretary Sunil Ambekar said while talking to media persons during his visit to the city. He added that the government plans to place the draft bill before the Parliament, but ABVP was of the opinion that it should follow democratic way, where people at large are involved.

Ambekar informed that ABVP had supported Hazare's agitation from the first day, with many of their members observing a hunger strike with the septuagenarian leader. "We had conducted nationwide rallies and candle light marches to support the cause of rooting out corruption from the country. In fact, we had been fighting for this cause since long," he stressed.

Speaking of the huge amount of black money stashed in foreign banks, the ABVP leader said they had demanded bringing back of the black money from Swiss banks immediately. "Even the judiciary had pulled up the government for its failure to keep track of black money deposited offshore. We want this money to be used for development," he said.
