Patil kicks off Tanta Mukti scheme in city

State home minister RR Patil kicked off community-based policing initiative in the form of Mahatma Gandhi Tanta Mukti (dispute resolution) scheme in the city. The scheme has met with considerable success in rural areas. City police chief Ankush Dhanvijay said that the scheme would be implemented in the city for the first time.

"Compoundable and non-cognisable offences could be settled through this scheme in the presence of representatives of the locality at the ward level, police and other opinion makers. This would reduce the burden on the police station and also pave a way for bonding with the cops," said Dhanvijay.

Speaking at the inauguration of reception counter and drinking water facilities at Sonegaon police station on Sunday, Patil told city cops to increase police presence at squares so that no one can get away with eve teasing.

Patil, who urged cops to increase patrolling, said vacancies in city police would be filled after the forthcoming general transfers. "We would ensure Nagpur police gets funds for modernisation for full-fledged installations like Global Positioning System," said Patil. He also patted the Nagpur police for cracking the Monica Kirnapure murder case.
