Deadline for medical CET syllabus feedback ends; MCI to prepare report soon

Deadline for medical CET syllabus feedback ends; MCI to prepare report soon
Thursday was the last day for sending feedback on the syllabus of the proposed single medical entrance exam for the under graduate level. The Medical Council of India (MCI) had uploaded the syllabus on its web site and sought feedback on the exam proposed for 2012.

Sangeeta Sharma, secretary of MCI, said, "The feedback sought was only for the syllabus which we have uploaded, and not for whether the exam should be held or not. As of now MCI is going ahead with the exam with the 2012 deadline in mind. We will now compile the feedback received as soon as possible because then we have to finalize the syllabus as well."

While the MCI is moving ahead with their plans, the Maharashtra government does not seem too keen with the proposed timeline. A meeting was held last week between the state medical education minister Vijay Kumar Gavit, selected members of the assembly and a member of the MCI.

Nagpur MLA Devendra Fadnavis, who was present during this important meeting, said, "We actually asked them to hold the test from 2016 only. We want that the syllabus should be at par right from Std VIII. As of now the syllabus is different by an average of 50% in all subjects in the CET. The government suggested to the MCI that the exam should be deferred."

Gavit was supposed to address the house today but due to other pressing issues the matter did not come up. A senior government official connected with the matter had told TOI on Thursday morning, "The matter will be discussed in the house today and the steps to be taken will be decided. We also don't want the exam in 2012. There is a calling attention motion in the assembly today and Gavit will listen to the views of various MLAs in the house and then final decision will be taken on what step should be taken by the Maharashtra government." Fadnavis said that now Gavit will give a reply on this issue to the assembly on Friday.

Sources say the government is mulling a decision of approaching the Supreme Court against the MCI's proposed timeline, however there was no official confirmation regarding the same. Parents group, opposed to the 2012 CET date, are also ready to join the state if it does decide to go the SC.

Nandini Babhulkar, an active member of the Nagpur based parents group, said, "We have full faith in the Maharashtra government that they will do what is best for HSSC students."
