University Students hail SC verdict on answer sheets

University Students hail SC verdict on answer sheets
The students community has hailed Supreme Court verdict giving them right to see their answer-sheets under the Right of Information (RTI) Act 2005. However, the Nagpur University officials expressed concern over the ruling stating that it would multiply their workload.

Interestingly, NU students were the happiest lot as the verdict would ensure they get copies of their answer-sheets within a month and that too at a pittance compared to what the university otherwise charges. At present, students have to wait at least two months for getting copy of their answer-sheet and for that they have to shell out Rs 350. Not just that, they can apply for photocopies of answer-sheets of only two subjects. Now they would have to pay just Rs 10 for the stamp and get the photocopy of answer-sheet, sources said.

Controller of examination (CoE) Siddaharthavinayaka Kane told TOI that though this would benefit the students, the ruling needed a second thought. "The ruling will be applied to all universities, so NU has to implement it. If there is a deadline of one month and no restriction on the number of subjects, this would be an uphill task," he said.

"In such a low amount, every failed or aggrieved student would demand a photocopy, even for a petty reason. Ultimately, the burden would pile up on the NU officials," he added.

For students like Avanika Gupta, pursuing her BA, the apex court verdict was a refreshing change. "Students would be saved tortuous wait for getting photocopies from NU. It will provide big relief to us as NU will have to provide photocopies within a deadline. Students appearing in supplementary exams would get more time for preparation too. Moreover, poor students would also be benefited due to lower cost," she said.

Another student Krutika Sonkusare said, it was big problem to apply for photocopies. "I am elated over the SC verdict, especially about the low charges. Previously, the process was a big hassle. Moreover, you could apply for only two subjects," she stated.

Vice-chancellor of Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences (DMIMS) Dr Vedprakash Mishra also hailed the verdict. "A student has the right to check his answer book to rule out any possibility of undervaluation. Under the RTI, it is punishable if the student is denied a copy of answer-sheet as it is his property and should be made available to him. That would keep a check on the faults of the valuer. However, this will challenge the NU ordinance," he said.
