Teacher commits suicide on teacher's day eve

Before the city began Teacher's day celebrations on Monday morning, a Junior College teacher, in his fifties, hanged himself on Sunday night.

Rajendra Mahalle was found hanging on the ceiling hook with nylon rope in his study room of his New Subhedar Lay-out residence in Sakkardara. Around 8.30am, his wife, Geeta, a homemaker had gone to wake up Mahalle but found him dead. Her screams alerted the relatives staying nearby and the neighbours.

Mahalle, a junior college teacher at Janjivan College in Bela at Umred, had planned to apply for voluntary retirement from the college, said police sub-inspector VS Salunke, who investigated the spot.

Salunke informed that so far no suicide note was found from the room or his pockets. While the family is still clueless about the suicide, police suspects some strong reason connected to his profession.

While the relatives conducted the last rituals at Gangabai crematorium, Mahalle's only son, Vivek, youngest of his three children, is still unaware about the incident. The relatives said that, Vivek had left home for Canada, where he works with a private Internet company, just few hours before Mahalle moved to his study room. Mahalle also has two daughters, both married.

Police said, the family as well friends are trying to contact Vivek but his number is not reachable.

The family informed that Mahalle had planned with Geeta to get his father-in-law discharged from a private hospital where he is undergoing treatment over an illness. Mahalle, who was known as a dedicated teacher, did not seem to be under any depression, informed family members.

The deceased's father, Rajaram was a freedom fighter. Cops informed that the family had good political connections and Mahalle had even donated property for a hospital at Bela.
