Shocked students of Umrer college of engineering, who thronged the government medical college and hospital on Tuesday, voiced resentment against the college management for not providing a mode of conveyance to the students who stayed in the city. The engineering students, who were left grieving the loss of their four mates in a mishap on Nagpur-Umrer road that claimed nine lives, also pointed out that the viva examination was extended on a second day for no apparent reason.
"The students suffer much due to lack of bus services that should have made available to students at a reasonable cost. The college charges for bus services were quite high," said a student.
"The students were forced to travel in a private bus. These buses drive at breakneck speed to accommodate more trips per day. The speed took the lives of four of our friends," said another student.
The students also pointed out that state transport buses do not stop near the institution as there are no designated stops. In the past, the college students also resorted to violence to highlight the situation but to no avail.
The upset students also pointed out that the viva examination and presentation of the projects were extended across two days for reason unknown to them. "The viva examination could have been finished within a day itself but it was extended by a day or two. Three of the final year students, who lost their lives, were among the ones whose viva was to be taken," a student claimed.
AW Bankar, vice-principal of the college, however, said that there were adequate buses and the dates of the viva examination was allotted by Nagpur university.
