Get ready to be numbered

The work of allotting Unique Identification (UID) numbers, also called the Adhar card, will finally commence in Nagpur district from January 10. The work was supposed to start from November 1, however, there were some technical difficulties.

Adhar work will commence from Kamptee tehsil, said resident deputy collector Pramod Bhusari, who is also nodal officer for the UID scheme. He told TOI that on January 4 a training programme for 13 tehsildars and 10 chief officers will be conducted at the collectorate. Later, on January 6, training will be organised in 13 tehsils.

In all, 1,550 state government employees would be engaged for Adhar work. For every 500 persons, one state government employee would be appointed to get UID forms filled.

Besides, private firms involved in the process — Wipro and Tera (who have been given the contract for feeding in the details) — will also appoint one person in each tehsil place, Bhusari informed.

He said, to get Adhar number, residents would have to go to the nearest enrolment camp. Residents would be photographed and have their fingerprints and iris scanned, while other details like name, date of birth, gender, residential address etc will be taken down. At present 70 machines will be used to take the iris scan and biometric fingerprints. Later, the number the machines will be increased.

Sources said that the government has also issued directions to the district collector, who is also the registrar for Adhar for Nagpur district, to ensure that 30% population of the district gets their UID numbers by March end. As per the instructions, seven lakh persons in Nagpur corporation limits and 8 lakh in rural areas will get their UID numbers.

Meanwhile, Phase-II of the census will be conducted by the Central government from February 9 until February 28, said the officer. For this, a district-level training of charge officers will be conducted on January 5. Similarly, training programmes for supervisors for the census will be conducted on January 10 and January 31 before starting the Phase-II census.
