Nagpur University has been in news but mostly for the wrong reasons. But, its students keep on bringing laurels to the 87-year-old institution. This time, five students from NU's Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Law College have been picked up by leading law firms in the country.
This is for the first time that any student has been picked by the companies for internship or job. It was the college's maiden attempt towards conducting campus interviews.
It was also for the first time that the college which had produced a host of stalwarts and legal luminaries, conducted campus interviews. Its alumni included - former prime minister PV Narasimha Rao, chief justice of Supreme Court and former vice president of India justice Mohammed Hidyatullah, eminent lawyer VR Manohar, scholar Shrikant Jichkar, former state minister Anees Ahmed, MLA Devendra Fadnavis, SC judges Ruma Paul and VS Sirpurkar, high court judges Jai Narayan Patel, Dilip Sinha, Vasanti Naik and Ravindra Chavan, among others.
Renowned firms like August Legal, AZB and J Sagar Associates selected top five students as interns during campus interview conducted on March 12.
Lecturer Kishor Mahabal was the brain behind this new venture. He took the initiative of establishing a placement cell in the college in January this year. Placement is actually an integral part of most of the renowned law schools across the country. "Practical experience is a must in this field. These students with their experience will for sure deal with multinational clients in the future," he told TOI.
The selected students, naturally elated, expressed gratitude towards their lecturers while speaking to TOI. One of the selected students Pallavi Malwar is looking forward to a fruitful experience. "I am delighted to get an opportunity to work with a high-ranking firm. I am thankful to the college for providing this platform," she said. She will get to work on linguistic skills and body language during the internship, she added. Another intern Jolly Bhattacharjee has been placed at Bangalore. "I would do my internship for a month then I will be coming back to complete my last year of college. I am sure this work-experience will be really helpful," she said.
"I never thought that I will get an opportunity to step into the corporate world so early. I am planning to pursue practice in judiciary or the corporate sector," another selected student Mir Ali added.
