After years of long wait, the Nagpur University will finally conduct its entrance exam for the doctor of philosophy (PhD) aspirants from July 7 to 10 and results would be out on July 11. Vice-chancellor Vilas Sapkal made this announcement after days of confusion while interacting with the reporters on Saturday. TOI on April 30 was first to report about NU contemplating to conduct PhD entrance. Ironically, NU was the last one among all non-agriculture universities in Maharashtra to not have entrance test for the PhD aspirants.
Controller of examinations Siddharth Kane deliberated that they adopted a completely new pattern based on the UGC guidelines. "It will not be easy as being touted. The entrance would follow by a tough interview before their synopsis would go before research recognition committee (RRC). The exam would be conducted twice an academic year - in July and January - and last registration dates would remain July and January 15 like previous years," he said.
He added that the PhD entrance would actually test the inclination of the candidate and his knowledge would be tested in the interview. "It would be based on logical reasoning, general aptitude, and English language usage among others. It will be conducted at campus by online method in separate batches of 100 students and results would be handed over immediately."
The exam registration will be made online from June 27 on NU website. The students, however, have to pay fees of Rs 800 (Rs 600 for reserved category) at NU exam centre on Amravati Road. There would be no negative marking. "The guide would be selected after consultation with the head of concerned department where the candidate aims to pursue his research. Students can also pursue their research in other universities. Moreover, if guide of a particular faculty is not available in NU, the candidates can select them from other related fields as NU had interdisciplinary boards," he informed.
