A second year engineering student, Atul Patil (22), hanged himself at his Bank Colony residence at Yadav Nagar on Monday afternoon. Patil's parents told cops that Atul was depressed due to his studies and that might have driven him to take the extreme step.
However, Yashodhara Nagar police, who are investigating the case, suspect a love affair behind the suicide. Police said Patil's friends said that though Atul was not good at studies, he was not depressed.
No suicide note was found, said police.
Atul was a student of Pandav engineering college. Police said that on Monday afternoon, after returning from college, Atul had gone out with his friends. "He came back and locked himself in his room. Since this was normal behaviour, his family members did not sense anything wrong," said police.
The matter came to light after Atul's elder brother Vikas went to call Atul to have dinner. Not getting any response, he broke open the door and saw Atul hanging.
Family members rushed Atul to a nearby private hospital but he was declared brought dead. Yashodhara Nagar police registered a case of accidental death.
Atul's father Tulsiram, who was a bank employee, passed away last year while his mother Shashikala is a housewife. Atul's youngest sister Swati is completing her graduation.
In an unrelated incident, 27-year-old Shivchand Sahoo ended his life by hanging himself to the ceiling hook at his Gulmohar Nagar residence in Kalamna on Monday evening. In another case, 50-year-old Jugendra Arora, vice president of Gupta Coal Corporation Limited, was found dead at his Jheel Rachana apartments residence at Subhash Nagar square on Tuesday morning.
