Even as the Nagpur University administration is heaving a sigh of relief after its roster for teaching posts was cleared by the state government, there's still confusion over the non-teaching section.
The roster scam, first exposed by TOI on March 19, 2009, unearthed large-scale irregularities in filling up of non-teaching posts. However, NU bosses seem reluctant to act against 'tainted' officials apparently due to pressure from a strong political faction.
Ironically, even after the Justice GG Loney panel indicted NU officials for tampering the roster, the NU top brass has not acted. The situation went from bad to worse after the panel report was sent to the deputy registrar of Jalgaon's North Maharashtra University, RJ Valvi for further verification. Valvi too endorsed a same action - to immediately lodge a police complaint to check the tampering of the roster - as proposed by justice Loney.
An official stated that the university top brass was still not interested in taking action against the culprits named by the Loney panel. In fact, some NU employees who were directly or indirectly named in the scam by justice Loney deliberately tried to stall the reimbursement of his bills incurred during the investigation. It was only after his warning that the NU bosses cleared his dues.
Valvi refused to take any calls. Perhaps, he took a clue from his counterparts in NU on how to avoid commenting on controversial issues. Even NU's PRO office was closed and previous queries regarding the roster scam were not entertained.
The official further disclosed that the NU also failed to act against 12 teaching posts which were reported as illegal by none other than principal secretary PS Meena in his report. Meena mentioned that the appointments of four NU teachers, including PN Khobragade, PM Tumane, VK Jambhulkar and DD Barasgade were illegal as the roster was ignored while recruiting them. The general administration department (GAD) team which submitted the report to the government had already asked NU officials to immediately replace them with appropriate candidates.
Academicians had already raised doubts over NU bosses' inaction in the roster scam even after three panels confirmed that tampering was done in the roster which led to filing up of many illegal posts. Firstly, the panel led by GAD section officer SG Kedare had brought to the fore startling revelations as reported by TOI stating that the university had flouted all rules and regulations while filling posts of assistant registrars. After the issue was raised in the state legislative council, the then VC, SN Pathan had constituted the justice Loney panel which confirmed the reporting. And now, the report was endorsed by Valvi.
